“Covid Diaries” became the title for this series when, after a couple of months of working I realized the narrative arks, reflecting our current state of affairs was a moving target. Just as diary entries are a record of daily events, no sooner would I sketch out a story on the canvas, wake up the next morning and what I thought my painting was about altered as breaking news overtook the narrative. With shocking regularity daily events turned incomprehensible. The new normal was not normal nothing was. Everyday brought new restrictions, political unrest, climate change upheaval and finally tiny glimmers of hope.
As I write this artist statement almost sixteen months into the pandemic I now know I will have to continue to update this statement as we are still clueless as to how this will all proceed. The only certainty is that there is no certainty. We all hope for the best, our
loved ones will be safe and our communities will not only survive but thrive.
