Voting Series

November 4, 2008 Voting Series

On November 4, 2008 America changed. People woke up and moved by the possibilities they took action. People voted. From every corner of our nation lines of citizens snaked through rural country stores, college cafeterias, urban streets and southern landscapes. Polling sites became symbols of renewal. This body of work narrates our collective awakening. These paintings are intentionally small, seeking an intimate connection with the viewer. To see the detail you must come up close. Using gouache paint gives the paintings a graphic and chalky texture, intentionally highlighting the illustrative quality of the subject matter.

The day after the November election newspapers became instant collector items. People were lining up all around the country to hold in their hands proof that the world had indeed changed. Midway though this series I started collaging November 5th 2008 newspapers into the paintings in order to illustrate what people were reading and seeing on that fateful day. Little by little every painting started using more of the newsprint from 11/5/08. My pile of text and images got smaller and I finally finished the series when only bits and pieces were left. The last of this series contains the last scrapes of November 4, 2008.
